An Inspirational Interview with Letizia Zombory for the DESIGNER magazine Global conducted by
Halina Rosa.
Special edition of the DESIGNER magazine for the Event Women Changing The World Award 2024, May 25th presented by Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson and Dr. Tererai Trent.
Halina Rosa: Letizia, it’s an honor to sit down with you today. Your journey as an artist is nothing
short of remarkable, and your achievements speak volumes about your talent and dedication. Let’s
start by discussing your recent accolades and awards. You’ve received numerous prestigious honors
throughout your career. What do these awards mean to you personally, and how do they influence
your artistic journey?
Letizia Zombory: Thank you, Halina. It’s a pleasure to be here and to share my experiences with you. Each award I’ve received holds a special place in my heart, not only as recognition of my artistic endeavors but also as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. These awards remind me of the challenges I’ve overcome and the triumphs I’ve achieved.
HR: How did your artistic journey unfold?
LZ: My journey into the world of art has been a winding road, to say the least. I was
born into a noble family in Hungary with Italian ancestry, but circumstances led me away from my
homeland. Initially, I studied Economics, but my passion for art always lingered in the background,
waiting for its moment to shine. It wasn’t until later in life, after facing personal tragedies and
profound life changes, that I fully embraced my calling as an artist.

HR: Your talent and determination are truly inspiring. Can you tell us about a specific award or
moment in your career that stands out to you as particularly meaningful?
LZ: One of the most memorable moments in my career was receiving the Trofeo Internazionale
Medusa Aurea in 2019 in Rome. This award was a validation of my artistic vision and a reminder that
art has the power to transcend borders and connect people from all walks of life. It was a humbling
experience to be recognized among so many talented artists and to know that my work resonated
with audiences on an international level.
HR: Can you tell us more about how those personal experiences influenced your decision to pursue art?
LZ: Certainly. In 2004, I faced one of the most devastating losses imaginable – the untimely death of
my son in a tragic accident. Painting became my sanctuary, my way of coping with grief and finding
solace amidst the chaos. It was during this time that I realized the transformative power of art – not
only as a means of expression but also as a source of healing and renewal.
HR: Your impact on the art world is undeniable, Letizia, how do you hope to continue growing and
evolving as an artist in the years to come?
LZ: My journey as an artist is a never-ending quest for self-discovery and expression. I strive to push
the boundaries of my creativity and explore new artistic territories. Whether it’s experimenting with
different techniques or delving deeper into themes that inspire me, I am committed to continuous
growth and evolution as an artist. My ultimate goal is to create art that not only captivates the
imagination but also touches the hearts and souls of those who experience it.

HR: That’s incredibly moving. How did your move to Italy shape your artistic identity?
LZ: Moving to Italy in 2009 marked a pivotal moment in my life and career. It was a power of faith, a
decision to embrace change and pursue my passion wholeheartedly. Italy, with its rich cultural
heritage and artistic legacy, provided the perfect backdrop for my creative journey. Here, I found
inspiration in the vibrant streets of Venice, the majestic history of Rome, and the timeless beauty of
the Italian countryside. My art became infused with the essence of Italy – its colors, its textures, its
spirit.Actually my skills are the expressive colours!I paint almost never the original colours.I paint the
colours and not the theme! My narrative device are the colours and the unit of them The colours are
my whole life!

HR: Your connection to Italy is palpable in your work. How do you approach your artistic process,
particularly when exploring themes like ancient Rome and the enchanting city of Venice?
LZ: For me, art is a deeply personal and intuitive process. I immerse myself in the essence of my
chosen themes, allowing them to speak to me on a visceral level. Whether it’s capturing the
grandeur of ancient Rome or the whimsical charm of Venice, I strive to uncover the soul of each
subject. My paintings are a reflection of my innermost thoughts and emotions.
HR: Your dedication to your craft is truly admirable. As you reflect on your journey so far, what advice would you offer to aspiring artists who are just beginning their own creative endeavors?
LZ: My advice to aspiring artists is simple: believe in yourself and never lose sight of your passion.
The road to success may be challenging, but perseverance and determination will carry you through
even the darkest times. Trust in your instincts, embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and above
all else, stay true to your artistic vision. And remember, the greatest rewards often come from the
journey itself, so savor every moment and never stop creating.

HR: Your ability to evoke emotion through your art is truly remarkable. What message do you hope
viewers take away from your work?
LZ: Above all else, I hope that my art serves as a source of inspiration and introspection for viewers. I
want them to feel a connection – to the stories I tell, to the places I portray, to the emotions I evoke.
Through my art, I aim to convey the beauty of resilience, the power of transformation, and the
enduring spirit of the human soul. Ultimately, I believe that art has the power to illuminate the
darkest corners of our existence and reveal the boundless possibilities of our imagination.

BIOGRAPHY and artist statement

Letizia Zombory is a Dutch citizen based in Italy.
She was born in 1944 in Hungary in a noble family, with Italian ancestors. She studied Economics at
the university in Budapest. She also wanted to study art history but there was no possibility.
In 1972 she married and became mother of two children.
In 1977 she left the Hungarian communist regime (where she was discriminated against because of
her noble origin)with her husband and her 2-year-old daughter. The Netherlands became her safe haven. In the Netherlands, she gained Dutch citizenship in 1984 and she found peace and tranquility.
Her marriage ended in a divorce in 1984. Around that time, in order
to cope with what had happened, she considered a career as an artist, to fulfill her childhood dreams.
In 2004 destiny struck again and her 24-year-old son was killed in a horrific accident. Her coping
mechanism was painting.
In 2009 she chose a different path in life and burned her ships to pursue a new life and career as a
painter in Italy. There, her work was discovered by galleries and art fairs, museums, and Academies.
She was invited to participate in every artist happening. The media wrote highly about her and her
artworks appeared in many Italian and international magazines and catalogues. She received awards
and she became a member of Academia, her artworks began to be well known abroad all over
Europe, Asia, and the United States.
Her artistic theme is the history of ancient Rome, the history of Venice, and the story of people like
Casanova, Cesar and Cleopatra, Nero, and many others.
Some of her most important expositions were in Florence, Innsbrück, London, Miami, Vienna,
Genova, Rome ( several times) Vatican, Monte Carlo, Stockholm Venice(several times), and Dubai.
Artist Statement
“In my paintings, I am always searching for the inner soul of a theme. A soul, a face, a hidden truth.
The image can be either reality or surreal. The image has to belong to the theme and the hidden
must be expressed, by any means necessary. I am always looking for the feelings of people,
landscapes, and inanimate objects.
In my Venice series, I want to show a less well-known image of this wonderful city, an image that has
not been painted during the centuries. I am a little ironic and playful, but so is this city too, always
different and incomprehensible. Everything revolves around the gondolas that have grown into halfhuman beings. I also wanted to show my love and humility for this wonderful city.
My Rome series tells the story of the Majestic capital of the old, the lost World with her glamorous
palaces, great emperors, and the common people. This tale is about the Eternal City that is
nowadays just as colorful pulsating, majestic, and eternal as it ever was.”
